Warren Spahn went the distance as the Washington Nationals defeated the
Pittsburgh Pirates 12 to 4 at Forbes Field.

Vern Stephens was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a
fine day at their team's expense. He slapped a one-base hit in the 1st
inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 3rd inning and tripled
plating two runs in the 8th inning. Washington banged out 14 hits on the
night.

Spahn(6-1), allowing 4 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Allie
Reynolds(1-5) suffered the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners
giving up 11 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings.
