Herb Score whiffed 12 batters at Wrigely Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates came
back dramatically to top the Chicago-NL Cubs by the score of 5 to
3.

Pittsburgh erupted with the game winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
when they came up with 4 runs on 2 hits. The critical plate appearance was
by Pete Runnels who helped quiet the crowd when he belted a three-run homer.
Pittsburgh had 10 hits for the afternoon.

Score(5-2) went 8 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Tom Acker recorded
his 5th save. Hersh Freeman(0-2) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of
an inning allowing no hits and no walks.

After the game, it took a long while before Ron Mead emerged from his office.
In a subdued tone he answered only a couple of questions. He concluded with,
'Fellows, sorry I'm not in a very talkative mood this afternoon, as I think
you'll understand. I'm sure you'll find the banter a lot more light-hearted
over in the Pittsburgh locker room.'
