WEB GEMS- Bot 9th: Del Crandall blocked the plate, saving a run!

Larry Doby had 5 hits and 5 RBI at Municipal Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds
beat the Cleveland Indians in 11 innings by the count of 9 to 6.

Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Cincinnati came out
on top in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Al Rosen began the
Cincinnati spurt when he drew a walk. Doby followed and he blasted a two-run
home run. Bill Virdon then delivered a single. One out later, Del Crandall
stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. Gil McDougald stepped into the
box and doubled scoring the final run of the inning. This was the kind of
game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 5 times.

The win was credited to Hank Aguirre(1-0) who went 1 inning allowing no runs.
Gerry Staley preserved the game for Aguirre, recording his his 2nd save. The
losing pitcher was Tom Sturdivant(3-3) in relief. He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 5 hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.

Doby was in a good mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball
real well now. I made some adjustments last week and they are paying off.
That's what this game is about. making adjustments as the season goes along.'
