WEB GEMS- Top 7th: Hal Janvrin robbed Duke Kenworthy of a base hit.

Russ Ford went 9 strong innings and left fielder John Hummel smacked 2 triples
and had 4 RBI as the Chicago Cubs really laid it on the struggling Washington
Nationals 11 to 0.

Hummel had a good day at the plate. He slapped a base-hit in the 3rd inning,
tripled plating two runs in the 4th inning and tripled which was good for two
runs in the 5th inning. Chicago simply wore out the Washington pitching
staff, scoring in 6 different innings.

Ford(8-5) went the distance for the shutout. The losing pitcher was Carl
Weilman(4-10). He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 3 and 2/3
innings.

'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Ford. 'I had good
command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything went
well.'
