Center fielder Gus Bell slammed a homerun and had 5 RBI as the Washington
Nationals defeated the New York-AL Yankees by a score of 12 to 9 at Griffith
Stadium.

Bell helped send the fans home happy. He ripped a base-hit in the 1st inning,
doubled scoring two baserunners in the 4th inning and belted a three-run
homer in the 8th inning. New York-AL had a chance to come back in the 9th
but they came up short.

The winning pitcher was Don Newcombe(6-5) who allowed 8 runs in 8 and 2/3
innings. Chuck Stobbs(3-7) suffered the loss. He got hammered, allowing 11
hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

Robert Baker was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure, this kind of
loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all professionals. We've
been through this many times - it's the nature of the game. We'll be fine -
as for me - I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!'
