In a close game it was the Chicago-NL Cubs 6, the Cleveland Indians 4 at
Municipal Stadium.

Cleveland found themselves trailing quickly as the Chicago-NL bats came
through in the first inning plating 2 runs. Duke Snider led off and got
things going when he drew a walk. Ernie Banks followed next and he cleared
the fences for a two-run home run. Cleveland made it exciting in the 9th,
but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Whitey Ford(9-7) allowed 4 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Hersh Freeman earned the save, his 3rd. Frank Sullivan(2-9)
suffered the loss. He allowed 3 homeruns in 8 innings of work.

'We didn't get the key hits when we needed them' Mel Gross said. 'We did what
we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?'
