Red Smith cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Detroit Tigers beat the awful
Washington Nationals by a score of 8 to 6.

Detroit brought 3 runs across the plate in the 5th inning when they had 3 base
hits.  The biggest moment was provided by Smith who made the home-town crowd
a happy bunch when he cleared the fences for a two-run home run.  The game
was a wild affair with the lead changing hands 5 times.  

Wilbur Cooper(12-5) went 6 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory. Rube
Bressler recorded his 13th save.  The losing pitcher was Joe Boehling(4-6).
He surrendered 8 runs and 15 hits in 8 innings.  

Detroit continued their winnings ways improving their record to a division
leading 79-26.  They are 8-2 in their last ten games.  Washington has a
record of 29-76, worst in the division after the loss.
