Hank Aaron had 4 hits as the New York-AL Yankees staged a dramatic comeback
over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 6 to 5 at Yankee Stadium.
New York-AL scored the winning runs in the bottom of the 9th inning plating 2
runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Richie Ashburn jump-started
the scoring when he clubbed a solo home run. Willy Miranda stepped into the
batter's box and he drew a walk. Lee Walls struck out, unable to help the
rally. Aaron was up next and he doubled resulting in an exciting win for New
York-AL and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. Although
they lost, Pittsburgh did out-hit New York-AL 15 to 12.
Don Gross(4-4) was the winner allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Jack
Harshman(3-6) was the losing pitcher in relief. He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk
in 1 and 2/3 innings.
'What a game!,' Gross said afterward. 'When we won it I almost couldn't
believe it!'
