Gus Bell had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Washington Nationals topped the pathetic New York-AL Yankees by a score of 15 to 11 at Griffith Stadium. The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Bell. He ripped a one-base hit in the 3rd inning, lined a base-hit in the 5th inning, blasted a two-run home run in the 6th inning and tripled in the 8th inning. Washington kept the scorekeepers busy in the 5th inning with 5 runs on 4 hits and the 6th inning which saw them plate 6 runs on 5 hits. New York-AL had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. Bob Rush(11-5) was the winner allowing 5 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Brooks Lawrence(5-17) was the losing pitcher. Washington scored big getting 8 runs off him in 5 innings. Robert Baker was subdued when questioned after the game, 'Sure, this kind of loss takes a while to get over, but heck, we're all professionals. We've been through this many times - it's the nature of the game. We'll be fine - as for me - I'll be ready to go again tomorrow!'
