Bill Virdon hit a homerun and had 4 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the
Chicago-NL Cubs by the score of 12 to 10 at Crosley Field.

Virdon had a big day at the plate. He bombed a two-run dinger in the 3rd
inning, doubled which was good for two runs in the 4th inning and slapped a
one-base hit in the 6th inning. Chicago-NL had a chance to come back in the
9th but they came up short.

The win was credited to Bob Chakales(1-0) who went 1 and 2/3 innings allowing
no runs. Nellie King was credited with his 25th save. Mike Garcia(12-10) was
hit with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 3 walks in 3 and
2/3 innings.

Preston Ward smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI but his offense was not enough
to carry Chicago-NL to victory.
