At Griffith Stadium, the Washington fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.
Fred Hutchinson(1-0) finally bested his Washington opposite, Warren
Spahn(0-1), by the score of 3 to 1.

Boston had 2 runs cross the plate in the 4th inning when they came up with 3
base hits.  They ended up being the winning runs.  Washington tried
unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.  

Jack Banta earned his 1st save. Spahn suffered the loss.  He gave up 10 hits
and 4 walks in 9 innings.
