Walter Johnson racked up an impressive total of 11 strikeouts as the
Washington Nationals defeated the Philadelphia Athletics in 11 innings by a
score of 6 to 4 at Shibe Park.

The score was tied at 4 after nine. Washington ended up winning it in the 11th
inning. Germany Schaefer led off the inning for Washington when he ripped a
one-base hit. Danny Moeller followed next and he laced a base-hit. Two outs
later George McBride stepped up to the plate and he tripled scoring two
baserunners. Washington managed 10 hits in their victory.

The victory was credited to Johnson(1-0) who went the distance, allowing 4
runs. The loss was charged to Jack Coombs(0-1). He pitched 10 and 2/3
innings giving up 10 hits and 2 walks.

Johnson didn't realize how many strikeouts he was racking up. When told he
had 11 he was obviously surprised, 'No kidding? Man, I knew that I had a
decent total, but I didn't think I had K'd that many. Say, that's pretty
good, isn't it?'
