WEB GEMS- Bot 7th: Bobby Thomson robbed Don Kolloway of an extra base hit.

Ralph Kiner launched 2 homeruns and Vern Bickford went the distance as the New
York Yankees beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5 to 4.

Kiner provided much of the offense. He lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the
4th inning, clubbed a solo home run in the 6th inning and stroked a one-base
hit in the 8th inning. Pittsburgh proved to be no trouble in the 9th.

Bickford(1-0) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. Billy Pierce(0-1)
was hit with the loss. He allowed 4 homeruns in 6 innings of work.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Wayne Wilson said after the game. 'Bickford did not have
command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew
how to pitch!'
