In a dramatic ending at Forbes Field the Pittsburgh Pirates won in their last
at-bat beating the Washington Nationals by the count of 2 to 1.

The game was decided in the bottom of the 9th inning.  Willie Mays tripled.
Two outs later Charlie Silvera stepped up to the plate and he lined a single
making Pittsburgh the victors to the delight of the home town faithful.
Washington was out-hit by Pittsburgh, 10 hits to 5.  

The victory went to Bob Friend(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Warren Spahn(1-4) was the loser.  He pitched 8 and 2/3 innings allowing 10
hits and no walks.
