Don Newcombe struck out 10 batters as the Washington Nationals topped the New
York-AL Yankees by a score of 7 to 0 at Griffith Stadium.

Newcombe(1-0) dominated New York-AL hitters. He surrendered only 5 hits and 2
walks in 9 innings. Washington finished with 8 hits in the victory.

The loss was charged to Jim Wilson(0-1). Washington scored big getting 6 runs
off him in 5 and 2/3 innings. When asked about his strikeout total for the
game, Newcombe offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to see them
tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately, I kept
them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'
