Monte Irvin ripped 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at Wrigely Field as the Pittsburgh
Pirates pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Chicago-NL Cubs by the
count of 7 to 6.

Pittsburgh came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring
2 runs utilizing 3 base hits. Ruben Gomez opened up the inning nicely when
he doubled. Irvin next to the plate and he doubled driving in a run. Red
Schoendienst then slapped a single. Randy Jackson was up next and he drew a
walk to load the bases. Bobby Thomson dug into the batters box next, but he
struck out. Mickey Vernon kept things alive and was hit by a pitch scoring
the final run of the inning. A wild affair, this game saw the lead change 5
times.

Gomez(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 3 innings and allowing 3 runs.
Johnny Sain(0-1) was the loser in relief.

'Irvin led the way - we just jumped on his back and let him take us,' Gomez
said. 'I'm glad I don't have to face him. I'm glad he's on my team.'
