Second baseman Solly Hemus collected 2 extra-base hits at Griffith Stadium as
the Chicago-NL Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 4 to 3.

The game was decided in the 8th inning. After an out was recorded, Hemus
doubled. Eddie Yost followed, but he was set down on strikes. Warren Spahn
then threw a wild pitch. Duke Snider was up next and he drew a walk. Johnny
Wyrostek came up to bat and stroked a one-base hit scoring the run.
Washington made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

The winning pitcher was Willie Ramsdell(2-0) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings.
Tom Ferrick recorded his 3rd save. Spahn(0-1) was given the loss.

'This was a tough loss,' said Gordy Renaud, 'the kind that sticks with you for
awhile.'
