Sam Mertes had 5 hits and 6 RBI and Christy Mathewson had a complete game at
Palace Of The Fans as the Cincinnati Reds embarrassed the Washington Senators
by the lopsided score of 18 to 2.

Mertes enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He laced a one-base hit scoring a run
in the 1st inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 3rd inning, delivered a
base-hit which scored a run in the 4th inning, laced a base-knock bringing in
two baserunners in the 7th inning and ripped a single which plated a run in
the 8th inning. Cincinnati provided plenty of action in the 7th inning which
saw them score 4 runs on 4 hits and the 8th inning which saw them plate 7
runs on 6 hits. Cincinnati kept the pressure on throughout the contest as
they scored in 6 different innings.

Mathewson(1-0) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs. Ned
Garvin(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and
