Buck Becannon was able to finish what he started and was credited with a
complete game and Chief Roseman had 4 hits and scored 3 times as the New York
Metropolitans won in dramatic fashion over the Philadelphia Athletics by a
score of 6 to 5 at Jefferson St Grounds.
New York had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 2 runs using
2 hits. Becannon led off the inning for New York when he laced a base-knock.
Candy Nelson followed and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. One out later,
Roseman was hit by a pitch. Dave Orr came up and he banged out a single, and
an error was also committed, knocking home two runners. Philadelphia was set
down quietly in the bottom of the 9th.
Becannon(1-0) was the winner allowing 5 runs for the game. Billy Taylor(0-1)
ended up with the loss. He was knocked around by New York, allowing 18 hits
and 3 walks in 9 innings.
'The only way this one could have been better', said Becannon, 'was if we had
played it at home.'
