Slim Sallee had a complete game at Redland Field as the Cincinnati Reds came
back dramatically to top the floundering Chicago-NL Cubs by the score of 7 to
6.
Cincinnati had the game winning rally in the 9th inning plating 3 runs on 2
base hits. After an out was recorded, Fred Snodgrass began the Cincinnati
spurt when he reached on an error. Harry Hooper stepped into the batter's
box and he reached on an error. Nap Lajoie then stroked a base-hit driving
in a run. Joe Tinker followed and he slapped a single plating one more
runner. Tinker took second on the throw. Tillie Shafer stepped into the box
and hit a deep fly giving Cincinnati the victory as 4,373 happy fans
celebrated wildly. It was roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands
5 times.
The victory went to Sallee(2-0) who went the distance allowing 6 runs. The
loss was charged to Willie Mitchell(3-2) in relief. He was a hard-luck
loser, pitching 2 and 2/3 innings and not allowing an earned run.
With this win, Cincinnati has a 6-8 record. They have been 5-5 lately. With
this loss, Chicago-NL has a 3-7 record of late, 9-8 overall.
