Bobby Doerr had 5 hits and 4 RBI as the Washington Nationals clobbered the
outmatched Cleveland Indians, 19 to 6.
Doerr provided much of the offense. He lost the ball over the fence for three
runs in the 2nd inning, ripped a base-knock in the 5th inning, lashed a
single in the 6th inning, banged out a one-base hit in the 8th inning and
stroked a base-hit which scored a run in the 8th inning. Washington provided
plenty of action in the 1st inning when they had 4 runs on 4 hits, the 6th
inning which saw them score 4 runs on 4 hits and the 8th inning with 6 runs
on 8 hits. Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 5 different innings
was still not enough for Cleveland to come away with the victory.
The winning pitcher was Johnny Sain(1-0) who allowed 6 runs in 8 and 2/3
innings. Bob Lemon(0-1) was the loser. He surrended 3 homeruns in his 5
innings.
