Dale Mitchell had 4 hits and 2 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the
Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings by a score of 9 to 8 at Forbes Field.

Both teams were tied at 8 runs apiece after nine innings.  Pittsburgh was
victorious in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Bobby Thomson drew
a walk.  Yogi Berra dug into the batters box next, but he struck out.  Hoot
Evers then drew a walk.  Mickey Vernon followed and he lined a one-base hit
to load the bases.  Willie Jones came up to bat and drew a walk making
Pittsburgh victorious to the delight of the the home town crowd.  Pittsburgh
had 18 hits for the game and Cincinnati had 12.  

The win went to Eddie Erautt(1-0) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Johnny
Schmitz(0-1) ended up with the loss in relief.  He surrendered 1 run and 1
hit in 2/3 of an inning.
