In an great finish the Pittsburgh Pirates won in dramatic fashion over the
Philadelphia-AL Athletics by a score of 3 to 2 at Forbes Field.
Pittsburgh came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning plating 3 runs on
3 hits. After an out was recorded, Randy Jackson started the attack as he
delivered a single. After another out, Andy Carey came up and he banged out
a single driving in a run. Bobby Hofman then cracked a two-run shot making
Pittsburgh the victors to the delight of the home town faithful. Pittsburgh
out-hit Philadelphia-AL for the game, 12 hits to 6.
Bob Friend(1-0) got the win allowing 1 run in 2 innings. Johnny Schmitz(1-1)
suffered the loss in relief. 'Now there is a lesson in perseverance for
you,' Don Mueller noted. 'It was looking pretty dim there for a while, but
we just kept plugging away and it really paid off in spades! And it was great
to see the crowd go crazy there at the end!'
