WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Johnny Logan robbed Dick Donovan of a base hit.

First baseman Mickey Vernon added four ribbies to his seasonal total with one
swing of the bat at Forbes Field where the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Kansas
City Athletics 13 to 4.

Vernon had a good day at the plate. He emptied the bases with a Grand Slam
homerun in the 5th inning and smacked a single bringing home two baserunners
in the 6th inning. Overall Pittsburgh out-hit Kansas City 13 to 10.

The victory went to Early Wynn(1-0) who went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs. Dick
Donovan gained credit for his 1st save. The loss was charged to Bob
Lemon(1-2). He was unable to control the Pittsburgh offense and allowed 8
hits and 3 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
