TEAM RISP- Nationals: 5 for 14 Yankees: 0 for 4

Gene Bearden pitched a 3 hit shutout and second baseman Bobby Doerr blasted 2
homeruns and had 3 RBI at Yankee Stadium as the Washington Nationals belted
the New York Yankees by the count of 15 to 0.

Doerr provided the offensive punch. He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the
5th inning, hit a single in the 6th inning and cleared the fences for a
two-run home run in the 7th inning. Washington provided plenty of action in
the 5th inning when they had 4 runs on 5 hits and the 6th inning which saw
them score 5 runs on 5 hits. Offensively, Washington was a juggernaut. They
scored in 6 separate innings.

Bearden(1-0) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Johnny
Vander Meer(0-1) was given the loss. He got hammered, allowing 10 hits and 3
walks in 5 innings.

Bearden was obviously very pleased with his performance in the aftermath of
the game, 'It was just one of those games where everything worked. My arm
felt great, heck, I could have pitched another two or three innings. I only
hope that I can do it again next time out!'
