First baseman Ted Kluszewski smacked 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Municipal Stadium as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Kansas City Athletics 8 to 3. Kluszewski enjoyed a great evening at the plate. He bombed a two-run dinger in the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 3rd inning, lined a base-hit in the 5th inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 7th inning and ripped a base-knock in the 9th inning. Cincinnati out-hit Kansas City for the game, 13 hits to 8. Bob Porterfield(2-0) went 6 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Johnny Antonelli(0-1) was the losing pitcher. Kluszewski said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate tonight. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'
