Gene McCann allowed Ned Hanlon to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as
the Brooklyn Superbas bested the New York Giants in 17 innings 3 to 2 at
Washington Park.

The score was knotted at 1 after nine innings. Brooklyn ended up winning it
in the 17th inning. After an out was recorded, Tim Flood was the sparkplug
when he delivered a base-hit. George Hildebrand came to the plate and drew a
walk. One out later, Rube Ward then lined a single, and an error was also
committed, making Brooklyn victorious to the delight of the the home town
crowd. The game was a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.

The win went to McCann(2-1) who allowed 2 runs in the game. Jack Cronin(0-1)
was the loser in relief. He gave up 5 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Ned Hanlon said after the game. 'McCann did not have command of
his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to
pitch!'
