First baseman Mickey Vernon went yard at Crosley Field as the Pittsburgh
Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings 4 to 2.

The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings.  Finally, Pittsburgh prevailed
in the 10th inning.  After an out was recorded, Vernon got things rolling
when he delivered a solo blast.  After another out, Al Dark came to the plate
and hit a bases-empty home run.  Pittsburgh had 12 hits for the afternoon.

Ellis Kinder(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 3 innings. Frank
Smith(3-3) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He gave up 2 hits and no walks
in 1 inning.
