First baseman Harry Stovey had 6 hits and 3 RBI and Bobby Mathews pitched a
complete game as the Philadelphia Athletics crushed the New York
Metropolitans 21 to 5.
Stovey really lit it up for Philadelphia. The New York fans let him have it
for what he did to their boys. He laced a single in the 1st inning, smacked
a one-base hit which plated a run in the 2nd inning, doubled in the 4th
inning, slapped a single in the 7th inning, doubled in the 7th inning and
lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 9th inning.
Philadelphia provided plenty of action in the 2nd inning which saw them score
4 runs on 3 hits and the 7th inning with 6 runs on 7 hits. The Philadelphia
offense man-handled the New York pitching staff as they scored in 8 of the 9
innings.
The win went to Mathews(1-0) who allowed 5 runs in the game. Ed Bagley(2-2)
suffered the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 28 hits and 5 walks in 9
innings.
Stovey said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate
today. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple
pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'
