One run was the difference at Shibe Park as the New York Yankees defeated the
slumping Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 6.
New York jumped on top to stay in the top of the 5th inning scoring 2 runs
using 3 hits. After an out was recorded, Ted Kluszewski began the New York
spurt when he doubled. Mike Guerra stepped up next and he doubled knocking
in a run. Stan Rojek was the next batter, but he struck out. Mel Parnell
followed next and he delivered a base-hit scoring the final run of the
inning. Philadelphia could do no damage in the bottom of the 9th.
The win went to Parnell(8-2) who allowed 6 runs in 6 innings. Parnell was
helped out by Ted Gray who recorded his 5th save. Bob Rush(2-2) was charged
with the loss. He surrendered 6 runs in 4 and 2/3 innings and saw his ERA
increase from 3.90 to 4.86.
'He gutted it out' Robert Baker said of Parnell. 'I was very impressed by his
tenacity.'
