One run was the difference at Griffith Stadium as the Washington Nationals
defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in 10 innings 4 to 3.

The score was tied at 2 after nine.  Washington came out the victor in the
10th inning.  Al Smith led off and got things going when he was hit by a
pitch.  After an out was recorded, Ray Boone stepped up to the plate and he
drew a walk.  One out later, Gus Bell then doubled giving Washington the win
much to the delight of the home town crowd.  Washington won despite being
out-hit by Pittsburgh 11 hits to 7.  

Carl Erskine(2-1) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Jim
Konstanty(1-1) was tagged with the loss in relief.  He allowed 3 runs and 3
hits in 1 and 2/3 innings.
