Virgil Trucks didn't allow a hit until the 8th inning at Shibe Park where the
Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Yankees 8 to 1.
Trucks(6-3) was in control of the game from the outset. He didn't give up
much, just 2 hits and 5 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.84 to
3.48. The right-handed Trucks lost his no-hit bid when Richie Ashburn
tripled with two outs in the 8th inning. Philadelphia had 12 hits for the
afternoon.
Robin Roberts(3-3) was the losing pitcher. He was knocked around by
Philadelphia, allowing 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.
