TEAM RISP- Reds: 7 for 19 Cardinals: 4 for 16

Art Phelan had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the St.
Louis Cardinals in 11 innings 9 to 6 at Robison Field.

Both teams had scored 6 runs after nine full innings. Cincinnati came out on
top in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded, Mike Mitchell
jump-started the rally as he drew a walk. Dick Egan came to the plate and
lined a base-hit. Phelan then ripped a base-knock resulting in a run. Jimmy
Esmond followed next and he hit a single plating one more runner. Larry
McLean stepped into the box and worked the squeeze play to perfection scoring
the final run of the inning. The St. Louis offense proved no trouble in the
bottom of the 11th.

Dixie Davis(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Gene Woodburn(0-1) suffered the loss in relief. Hank O'Day was just
happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad streak of games -- boy, it's great
to get the monkey off our back. Now maybe we can relax a little and play the
kind of baseball of which we are capable.'
