Vic Raschi pitched 7 strong innings at Forbes Field as the St. Louis Cardinals
beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8 to 1.

St. Louis took the lead for keeps in the top of the 5th inning with 2 runs on
2 base hits.  After an out was recorded, Whitey Lockman jump-started the
scoring when he hit a bases-empty home run.  Walker Cooper came next and he
drew a walk.  Carl Furillo then banged out a single.  Eddie Yost followed
next and he hit a deep fly scoring the final run of the inning.  St. Louis
out-hit Pittsburgh for the game, 12 hits to 3.  

The victory was credited to Raschi(6-1) who went 7 innings, allowing 1 run.
Erv Palica earned the save, his 2nd.  Billy Pierce(2-3) was hit with the
loss.
