Eddie Lopat pitched 6 strong innings and Al Dark had 5 hits and 2 RBI as the
Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Washington Nationals in 16 innings by a score of
7 to 5.

Both teams had scored 5 runs after nine full innings.  Pittsburgh won the hard
fought contest in the 16th inning.  Mickey Vernon got things going when he
doubled.  After an out was recorded, Yogi Berra came up and he lined a
one-base hit bringing in a run.  One out later, Randy Jackson then drew a
walk.  Dark followed and he lined a single scoring the final run of the
inning.  Pittsburgh bats were hot in the 3rd inning when they had 3 runs on 4
hits.  For the game Pittsburgh out-hit Washington 21 to 15.  

The winning pitcher was Bob Turley(1-0) who allowed no runs in 3 innings. The
loss was charged to Joe Nuxhall(3-5) in relief.  The Pittsburgh ballclub's
record now stands at 15-10.  With the loss, Washington has a record of 6-4
lately, 19-14 overall.
