Vern Stephens cracked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI and Bob Feller was able to
finish what he started and was credited with a complete game as the
Washington Nationals smashed the overmatched Pittsburgh Pirates, 14 to
4.

Stephens was unconscious all day. The Pittsburgh fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He lofted
a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 4th inning, lofted a three-run bomb in the 4th
inning, stroked a one-base hit in the 6th inning and lashed a single bringing
in a run in the 7th inning. Washington totaled 18 hits on the afternoon.

Feller(3-3) lasted until the end allowing 4 runs for the win. Eddie Lopat(0-5)
suffered the loss. By surrending 10 runs in 6 innings his ERA jumped from
5.27 to 5.55.

'I felt great out there today,' Stephens said, 'Maybe I should make a regular
habit of getting to bed on time!'
