Duke Snider stepped into the batter's box and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Eddie Yost then tripled which scored a run. One out later, Walker Cooper came to the plate and drew a walk. Whitey Lockman came up to bat and doubled scoring the final run of the inning. St. Louis had 11 hits overall, while Philadelphia had 7. Bill Werle(1-0) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Tom Ferrick earned the save, his 9th. Bobby Shantz(3-3) took the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 2 and 2/3 innings of work. The St. Louis ballclub's record now stands at 24-23. With the loss Philadelphia now has a record of 20-19.
