WEB GEMS- Bot 1st: Wes Westrum blocked the plate, saving a run!

At Shibe Park, the Philadelphia-NL fans witnessed a great pitcher's duel.
Russ Meyer(5-1) finally bested his Philadelphia-NL opposite, Bobby
Shantz(2-2), by the score of 1 to 0.

Cincinnati scored the only run of the game in the 6th inning. Ralph Kiner
doubled. After an out was recorded, Wes Westrum stepped up to the plate and
he reached on an error. Westrum then hit a deep fly scoring the run. Stu
Miller came throught with a perfect ninth inning to earn his 6th save.

Shantz was hit with the loss. It was a tough loss for him as he did not allow
an earned run in his 7 and 1/3 innings of work.

'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Meyer, 'I was just
giving us a chance to win.'
