First baseman Johnny Mize knocked 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Washington
Nationals outscored the Chicago-NL Cubs 17 to 9.

Mize had a big day with his bat. He popped a two-run clout over the fence in
the 3rd inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 5th inning and smashed
a two-run homer in the 9th inning. Washington kept the scorekeepers busy in
the 5th inning which saw them score 7 runs on 6 hits. The Washington offense
was great, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

Warren Spahn(4-3) got the win allowing 8 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings. Larry
Jansen(2-2) took the loss. He served up 4 homeruns in his 4 and 2/3 innings.

Mize was in a good mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball
real well now. I made some adjustments last week and they are paying off.
That's what this game is about. making adjustments as the season goes along.'
