Bobby Mathews went the distance as the New York Mutuals defeated the
Philadelphia A Athletics by a score of 15 to 7 at Jefferson St Grounds.
John Hatfield was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he
provided much of the offense for the visitors. He tripled scoring two
baserunners in the 4th inning, ripped a base-hit which plated a run in the
8th inning and laced a single resulting in a run in the 9th inning. New York
bats were hot in the 2nd inning with 3 runs on 3 hits, the 3rd inning scoring
3 runs and the 8th inning which saw them plate 3 runs on 4 hits. The New
York offense smacked the Philadelphia A pitching staff around, scoring in 7
of the 9 innings.
The victory was credited to Mathews(5-2) who went the distance, allowing 7
runs. Dick McBride(4-2) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 12 hits and 2
walks in 9 innings.
