Right fielder Dick Higham had 4 hits and 4 RBI as the Providence Grays(P) beat
the Boston Red Stockings by a score of 26 to 17.
Higham provided much of the offense. He lifted one out of the park for a two
run home run in the 2nd inning, doubled plating a run in the 4th inning,
smacked a single in the 8th inning and doubled which brought home a run in
the 9th inning. Providence bats were very productive in the 4th inning when
they had 5 runs on 6 hits and the 5th inning with 10 runs on 7 hits. The
Providence offense smacked the Boston pitching staff around, scoring in 7 of
the 9 innings.
The win was credited to Fred Corey(1-2) who went 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 6
runs. Jack Manning(0-1) was the loser. He was unable to control the
Providence offense and allowed 27 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.
