Ferris Fain had 2 base hits at Sportsman's Park as the St. Louis Cardinals won
a thriller over the floundering Pittsburgh Pirates in, 3 to 2.

The game was won by St. Louis when they scored a run in the bottom of the 9th
inning.  Whitey Lockman laced a base-knock.  After an out was recorded, Jerry
Priddy stepped in and he ripped a single.  Priddy took second on the throw.
After another out, Pee Wee Reese then delivered a one-base hit resulting in a
mighty exciting win for St. Louis and the 20,046 home town fans in
attendance.  Pittsburgh out-hit St. Louis 10 to 6, but St. Louis ended up
with more runs.  

The victory was credited to Monk Dubiel(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no
runs. Early Wynn(0-4) suffered the loss.  He gave up 3 runs and 5 hits in 8
and 1/3 innings.
