Don Newcombe threw a 4 hit shutout at Griffith Stadium as the Washington

The score was a scoreless tie after nine. Washington was victorious in the
10th inning. Bobby Adams drew a walk. Joe Dimaggio stepped into the
batter's box and he doubled. Dom Dimaggio then was walked intentionally to
load the bases. Bobby Doerr came up and he drew a walk resulting in an
exciting win for Washington and a wild post-game celebration by the home town
fans. Washington had only 6 hits for the game.

Newcombe(2-4) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Chet
Nichols(1-2) was tagged with the loss in relief. He surrendered 1 hit and 3

'I thought it was my best performance in a long time,' said Newcombe. 'I had
good command early in the game. I had my control and composure and everything
went well.'
