History was made in Detroit as Bill Donovan(1-0) tossed a no-hitter and the
Detroit Tigers defeated the Philadelphia Athletics by the score of 7 to
0.
The partisan crowd cheered every Philadelphia out from the 7th inning on. He
walked 3 Philadelphia batters. The tension was mounting with every inning
after the 6th. Donovan appeared oblivious himself to the mounting history
until two were out in the 9th. Only then, did he allow himself one deep sigh
and a slow trip around the mound. Detroit rapped out 10 hits for the
afternoon.
The loss was charged to Jack Coombs(2-3). He pitched 8 innings giving up 10
hits and 3 walks. What a show!' Hughie Jennings said. 'Donovan was great out
there -- I'm happy that he got it.'
