12,710 fans were treated to a fine game at Sportsman's Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The St. Louis Cardinals won by the
slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

St. Louis tallied 4 runs in the 5th inning with the help of 3 hits. The key
offensive moment was provided by Carl Furillo who brought the crowd to their
feet when he laced a single plating two runs. New York threatened in the 9th
but their rally came up short.

The winning pitcher was Vic Raschi(7-1) who allowed 4 runs in 5 innings.
Raschi got help from Walt Masterson who earned his 1st save. Vern
Bickford(4-1) was the loser. St. Louis scored big getting 6 runs off him in
4 and 1/3 innings.

Robert Baker was reflective after the loss, 'We should have won this one, we
just made one too many mistakes. Son-of-a-gun, that added a couple more
white hairs on this noggin of mine.'
