Bobby Mathews had an impressive outing as the Philadelphia Athletics pulled
out a win over the New York Metropolitans by a score of 3 to 2 at Jefferson
St Grounds.

Philadelphia won the game with a run in the 9th inning. Ed Rowen reached on
an error. After another out, Fred Corey was a strikeout victim, unable to
help out. Jud Birchall then laced a base-hit resulting in an exciting win
for Philadelphia and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans.
Both teams finished the game with 6 hits.

The victory was credited to Mathews(9-1) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Jack Lynch(3-2) was the losing pitcher. He was a hard-luck loser as he
did not allow an earned run in his 8 and 2/3 innings of work.

'Mathews pitched a gem of a game', Jim Mutrie recounted. 'He kept our batters
off balance the entire game.'
