Fred Blanding had a complete game as the Washington Nationals defeated the
Philadelphia-AL Athletics by a score of 9 to 5 at Griffith
Stadium.

Blanding(4-1) earned his pay with a solid performance for Washington.  He went
9 innings surrendering 10 hits and 4 walks.  Washington rapped out 13 hits
for the afternoon.  

Buck O'Brien(5-3) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed 11 hits and 5 walks in 7
innings.  Gordon Renaud was just happy to get a win, 'We've had such a bad
streak of games -- boy, it's great to get the monkey off our back.  Now maybe
we can relax a little and play the kind of baseball of which we are capable.'
