Three Finger Brown held Cincinnati scoreless on just 4 hits as the
Philadelphia-NL Phillies defeated the Cincinnati Reds in 11 innings by a
score of 1 to 0 at Baker Bowl.
The run-column was full of goose eggs at the end of nine full innings.
Philadelphia-NL won the game in the 11th inning. After an out was recorded,
Davy Jones laced a base-hit. Otis Clymer was next and he smacked a single.
One out later, John Titus then slapped a single giving Philadelphia-NL the
win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Philadelphia-NL rapped out 7
hits for the afternoon.
Brown(6-2) was credited with the shutout. Christy Mathewson(6-5) was the
losing pitcher. Doug Hatch lamented, 'Brown was really aggressive today. He
kept coming after our hitters. Heck, why not. he kept sitting our guys down
one after another - like so many bowling pins!'
