separated the combatants at game's end.  The Pittsburgh Pirates plated 6 runs
in the 7th inning and won by the slimmest of margins, 8 to 7.

Frank Smith(1-1) was brilliant in relief and registered the victory.  He was
flawless in relief in his 1 inning.  New York-AL threatened in the 9th but
Pittsburgh was able to put down the rally.  

Ellis Kinder recorded the save, his 4th.  Carl Erskine(1-4) ended up with the
loss in relief.  He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings and surrendered 2 hits and no
walks.
