WEB GEMS- Top 3rd: Lou Bierbauer robbed Jack Crooks of a base hit.

11,713 fans were treated to a fine game at Exposition Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Pittsburg Pirates plated 5 runs
in the 7th inning and won by the slimmest of margins, 10 to 9.

Pittsburg scored the decisive runs in a big 8th inning scoring 3 runs on 4
hits. After two outs Jake Stenzel started the attack as he smacked a single.
Stenzel got a great jump and stole second easily. Bill Merritt then singled
knocking in a run. Jake Beckley stepped in and he was hit by a pitch. Lou
Bierbauer stepped into the box and delivered a single to load the bases. Joe
Sugden extended the rally and slapped a one-base hit driving home another two
teammates. Washington made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to
push the needed runs across.

The victory went to Pink Hawley(5-6) who went 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing 9
runs. Hawley got relief help from Charlie Hastings who gained credit for his
1st save. Win Mercer(4-6) was the loser. He got hit hard, allowing 15 hits
and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings.
